On the 20th anniversary of the total eclipse of August 11, 1999, the Institution of Contemporary Art – Dunaújváros (ICA-D) presents the exhibition Black Light in Dunaújváros, between July 20 and August 23, 2019, in cooperation with the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center. The organizers have announced a collection campaign for private photographs and private videos related to the Black Light. This installation showcases a selection of the images collected in the course of this campaign, as well as the press photographs unearthed for the exhibition.

It is an amazing coincidence that this total eclipse in Hungary was around the last moment when “folk photography” was still recorded almost exclusively on analog film. In addition to the private photos and videos received through our open call to the public, we also included a great amount of press photos culled from various archives. In the case of a natural phenomenon of this magnitude and impact, which has kept the whole country in fever, it is important to show how professionals related to it. Our sorting work took a lot of time; we were looking for images that go beyond mere press photos, and are easy to connect to the genuine nature of the private pictures. Nevertheless the submissions for the call also included photographs taken by professionals; and many private recordings conveyed more complex meanings than just depictions of a family event.
What we can see here on the walls is a recently collected themed archive that is not visible anywhere else. Just as any other analog archives, it is true to this collection that every image in it may be considered equal and further sorting is absolutely unnecessary. Editing is important, though. We know the event they represent, we know the occasion of the documentation; and it is worth treating these pictures as equal, because they are all part of our collective memory.
